For many years, Christians have felt scorned by naturalistic science if they wish to hold to the literal Biblical account of creation, and that God had His hand in all creation, including man and woman (Genesis 1-2).  In an effort not to be scoffed at by the scientific community, many have compromised by saying that God used evolution.  But considering this idea of God using evolution, two questions must be considered.  Is it Biblically plausible to believe that God used evolution as opposed to fully accepting the Biblical account of creation?  If this is not possible, how do scriptures direct us to this conclusion?

Evolution is the invention of man, who has a fallible mind that can, and often is, wrong about many issues.

In order to understand the question of evolution, it is first important to understand the chronological history hypothesized by the theory of evolution.  This article examines evolution as the theory postulated by Charles Darwin in his book, “The Origin of the Species.”  Basically that theory states that man gradually became the creature that he is today by a series of remarkable changes in various species to arrive to the Homo sapiens man that we have become.

In a nutshell, about 3.6 billion years ago, prokaryotes were the first living cells that developed in a primordial soup.  These single cell organisms, which lack a nucleus and intracellular mitochondria, eventually gained mitochondria and nuclei to become multi-cellular organisms approximately 2 billion years ago.  Next, amphibians evolved 360 million years ago, with mammals following them 160 million years later.  Primates emerged about 60 million years ago, with the first Homo sapiens human developing 200,000 years ago.

The fossil record is frequently referenced in an effort to prove the theory of evolution, with various supposed steps of the evolution chain contained in various layers of strata.  The varied layers have been identified as being hundreds of millions of years old.  These layers of strata not only contain the presumed proof of the evolutionary chain to Homo sapiens, but they also show a world that was full of violence, with dinosaurs attacking and killing other dinosaurs.  These layers contain fossils of creatures that had diseases such as cancer.  They also contain various species of plant life, including various thorns.

In order to arrive to a proper, doctrinal conclusion on the question of evolution, it is necessary to understand a few very basics points regarding sin.  First, the Word of God defines sin as lawlessness (1 John 3:4), or a breaking of His holy standard.  The truth is that we are not able to keep living God’s standard of holy, pure righteousness, since all our very best good works are like “filthy rags” compared to God (Isaiah 64:6).  As such, we are all labeled as sinners under the Bible’s teaching (Romans 3:23).

Many people would ask the question, “Why would God create a world with sin?”  The truth is that God created the universe without sin, but sin entered the picture later.  Romans 5:12 tells us that “through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin.”  Even people who believe that God used evolution will acknowledge that Adam was the first Homo sapiens who appeared some 200,000 years ago.  The “one man” mentioned In Romans 5:12 is a direct reference to Adam, who openly disobeyed God by breaking His revealed instructions given to Adam.  Since sin entered into the world by Adam, it is logical that before Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden, there was no sin that affected all creation.  The effects of sin on man include guilt (Genesis 3:7), lost fellowship with God (Genesis 3:8) and death (Genesis 3:19).

Not only is it important to understand that sin forever changed mankind, but all creation was affected, as well.  Sin cursed the ground (Genesis 3:17) and cattle (Genesis 3:14), as well as introducing the curse of death for cattle (Genesis 3:21).  Furthermore, the Bible states that not only were the ground and the cattle affected by sin, “the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now” (Romans 8:22).  In other words, everything that was created is affected by sin.  This would include all creatures, all the elements, all the planets, moons, asteroids, comets, suns and any other space particles.

In short, the basic doctrines revealed here show that there was no sin until Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden.  The curse of death through sin did not shackle all creation until after Adam sinned by eating the forbidden fruit sometime after the seventh day, the Sabbath day.  In fact, God proclaimed all His work as good six different times (Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25), and declared it to be “very good” after creating man and woman (Genesis 1:31).  All creation lived together in harmony with no violence, bloodshed, disease or death.  All this analysis by God was made before sin ever entered the universe.

Theistic evolutionists are people who believe that God was working in and through the evolutionary process to create all creatures, including mankind.  Further, they teach that evolution as the origin of our species is not only supposedly scientific, but that it is compatible with the Bible.  Last, people who promote theistic evolution want to believe that it is plausible, intellectually satisfying and logically consistent.  All these points have been devised by intelligent people.  Yet, Romans 8:18-23 tells us that His wrath is focused on those who refuse to obey Him, that His role as Creator of everything is clearly evident, and that “professing to be wise, they became fools.”

There is a great contradiction regarding evolution as the origin of the species and the Biblical teaching of creation.  According to theistic evolution, the original Homo sapiens, Adam, did not appear until some 200,000 years ago.  Therefore, according to the fossil record, all the creatures that lived before Adam died at some point.  But how could any creature have died before sin entered the world, because “by one man sin entered the world, and DEATH BY SIN?”  In addition, the fossil record tells a story of despair, with creatures battling other creatures and animals that were riddled with cancer!  Would God have looked over millions of years of violence, bloodshed, disease and death, and declared all creation as “very good?”  Herein lays the Great Contradiction.

Yet another thorn in the side of evolution is the fact of fossilized thorns, themselves.  There have been a number of thorn fossils discovered as recently as 2012 in Nova Scotia that supposedly date back as far as 299,800,000 years before homo sapiens appeared1.  However, the Word of God states that after Adam sinned in the garden, “both thorns and thistles it (the ground) shall grow for you” (Genesis 3:18).  According to our Creator’s decree, it would be impossible for thorns to appear in the fossil record before Adam was created, as theistic evolution teaches.

Evolution is the invention of man, who has a fallible mind that can, and often is, wrong about many issues.  Theistic evolution is another invention of man to attempt to make the Bible more in alignment with man’s scientific theories.  However, good science will always point to the Bible, not attempt to alter it.  While the Bible is not a science book, it is the final authority on all matters which it addresses (2 Timothy 3:16).  The doctrines presented in this article should reveal that God did not use evolution, but that God literally “formed man of dust from the ground” (Genesis 2:7) and that He actually “fashioned a woman” (Genesis 2:22).
