Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” – John 8:12

There used to be a toddler who lived next to us, and my dad loved to play with her.  Her mom would allow her to come to our house every afternoon to spend time with he and my mom.  Mom would color and work crafts with her.  Dad would find goofy ways to help her overcome her fears.

One thing that this girl would express her fear about was monsters that lurked in the dark.  Her mom even confirmed that bedtime was a struggle, even with a nightlight.  Dad would go into a large closet with her, close the door and wait for her to tell him that the monsters were there.  But dad kept a small flashlight in his pocket, and when it was turned on, the monsters would flee.  He gave her a flashlight that she could have to keep for bedtime.  They played this game for countless days.

This dark world is full of monsters:  fear, uncertainty, unrighteousness, hatred and spiritual separation.  These monsters can have a profound effect on our mind and body.  But the pollution they cause to our soul is even worse.  It is like we need a flashlight to carry around all the time!

Some Pharisees had brought Jesus a woman who was caught in the act of adultery, demanding that she be stoned according to the law.  He told them that whoever had never sinned, then those people could throw stones at her.  With all the men gone, Jesus forgave the woman and told her to live a righteous life.

Directly after this, Jesus made the proclamation in the verse above.  Finally!  The flashlight we have needed all along!  Jesus is the answer to our uncertainty of what will happen when our soul is loosed from our bodies in death.  He is righteousness in human flesh.  His light chases away the hatred of Satan and reveals the love of God.  He is the bridge that eliminates the gap of spiritual separation from God.  All that is required is to follow His command from John 8:51, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”

Monsters defeated.
